How to Become a Yoga Teacher in Christchurch, NZ
Your Guide to Kula Studio’s 200hr Yoga Teacher Training
If you've ever finished a yoga class and thought, “I’d love to share this with other people,” you might be wondering what it actually takes to become a yoga teacher.
Perhaps you’ve been practising for years. Perhaps yoga has become an important part of your life and you’re curious to understand it beyond the physical practice. Or perhaps you simply feel called to learn more, without knowing exactly where that might lead.
There is no single path into teaching yoga.
You don’t need to be the most flexible person in the room, master complicated postures, or have everything figured out before you begin.
What you do need is curiosity, commitment and a willingness to keep learning.
At Kula, our 200hr Yoga Teacher Training is designed to give you the knowledge, practical skills and confidence to begin teaching — while creating space for the deeper personal journey that happens along the way.
Can Anyone Become a Yoga Teacher?
Yes.
One of the biggest misconceptions about becoming a yoga teacher is that you need to look like a “yoga teacher” before you begin.
You don't.
Yoga isn't about how deeply you can fold, how long you can hold a handstand, or whether you fit a particular image of what a yogi looks like.
A great teacher is someone who can listen, communicate clearly, create a safe space and meet their students where they are.
Your body will be different from your students' bodies. Your practice will be different. Your experience will be different.
That's part of what makes your voice as a teacher valuable.
Our 200hr training welcomes dedicated practitioners who want to deepen their understanding of yoga and those who feel ready to begin the journey towards teaching.
You don't need to know exactly where it will take you.
You simply need to be willing to begin.
Step 1: Build Your Personal Practice
Before we teach yoga, we experience it.
Your own practice becomes one of your greatest teachers.
Through consistent practice, you'll begin to explore:
Asana and functional movement
Breath and pranayama
Meditation and awareness
Yoga philosophy
The relationship between body, mind and nervous system
The ways yoga can support us both on and off the mat
You don't need decades of experience, but having an established relationship with yoga will help you get the most from your training.
And importantly, your practice doesn't need to look a certain way.
At Kula, we're interested in how yoga works for the individual, rather than trying to make every body fit the same shape.
Step 2: Choose the Right 200hr Yoga Teacher Training
A 200hr Yoga Teacher Training is often the first major step for someone wanting to teach yoga.
But not all 200hr trainings are created equally.
The school you choose will shape not only what you learn, but how you experience the process of becoming a teacher.
At Kula, our training brings together traditional yogic teachings and contemporary movement science, giving you both the roots of the practice and the tools to understand how yoga can be applied to real, diverse human bodies.
Throughout the training, you'll explore:
Yoga Philosophy + History
The history and philosophy of yoga, including foundational texts, where the practice came from and teachings that invite you to explore yoga beyond the physical practice.
Functional Anatomy
A practical understanding of the human body, movement, joints, muscles and individual variation — and how this informs the way we teach asana.
Teaching Methodology
How to sequence, cue, demonstrate, observe and communicate with clarity and confidence.
Practice Teaching
Because teaching isn't something you can learn purely from a textbook. You'll have opportunities to teach, receive feedback and find your own voice.
Pranayama & Meditation
Exploring breath, attention and the practices that help cultivate awareness and regulate the nervous system.
Embodiment & Self-Inquiry
Learning not only how to teach yoga, but how to experience it more deeply within yourself.
Why Your Choice of Training Matters
A 200hr certificate is only one part of becoming a yoga teacher.
The quality of the education, the people teaching you, the amount of practical experience you receive and the community you learn alongside all matter.
We believe teacher training should feel challenging, supportive, curious and deeply human.
At Kula, you'll learn in person in our Christchurch studio, surrounded by a community of practitioners and teachers who are actively living and teaching the practice.
You'll have the opportunity to ask questions, experiment, make mistakes, receive feedback and gradually build confidence in your own voice.
Because ultimately, we're not interested in creating teachers who all sound the same.
We're interested in helping you become the teacher only you can be.
Step 3: Complete Your 200hr Training
Our 200hr Yoga Teacher Training is an immersive journey into the practice, philosophy and teaching of yoga.
Over the course of the training, you'll move between learning, practising, observing and teaching.
Some days will challenge you.
Some will completely shift the way you understand something you've been practising for years.
And some of the most important learning may happen in the conversations between classes, the questions you didn't know you had, and the moments where you begin to see your own practice differently.
You'll graduate with:
A comprehensive foundation in yoga philosophy and practice
Functional anatomy knowledge
Teaching and sequencing skills
Practical teaching experience
Greater confidence in your ability to guide others
A deeper personal practice
A community of fellow teachers and practitioners
Step 4: Find Your Voice as a Teacher
Your first class can feel terrifying.
You might forget what you were going to say.
You might overthink your cues.
You might wonder whether anyone is actually listening.
That's okay.
Teaching yoga is a practice too.
Your confidence grows through experience — through teaching, observing, receiving feedback and continuing to learn.
Your first teaching opportunities might be with friends or family, at a local studio, in community spaces, through private sessions, workshops or eventually your own offerings.
You don't need to know exactly what your teaching career will look like when you start your training.
You just need to start exploring.
Step 5: Keep Learning
Becoming a yoga teacher isn't the end of your education.
It's the beginning.
Many teachers continue their studies through:
Advanced 300hr trainings
Functional anatomy
Yin + Restorative Yoga
Prenatal yoga
Somatic movement
Meditation
Breathwork
Hands-on assisting
Workshops and retreats
Further study in yoga philosophy
The best teachers remain students.
There will always be more to discover.
Do I Need to Be Flexible?
Absolutely not.
This is one of the first questions we hear from people considering teacher training.
Yoga teachers come in every shape, size, age and ability.
In fact, learning to understand individual bodies rather than assuming everyone should move in the same way is a huge part of our approach at Kula.
You don't need to be able to do the splits.
You don't need to be able to handstand.
You don't need to look like an Instagram yoga teacher.
You need curiosity.
Do I Need Years of Yoga Experience?
Not necessarily.
We recommend having a consistent personal practice before beginning a 200hr training, because you'll get more from the experience if you're already familiar with yoga as a student.
But you don't need to have practised for ten years.
If you feel genuinely curious about yoga and ready to commit to learning, you're welcome to enquire.
Do I Have to Become a Yoga Teacher?
No.
This is something we really want people to know.
You can complete a 200hr training because you want to teach.
But you can also do it because you want to understand yourself and your practice more deeply.
Many people begin a YTT without knowing whether they'll ever teach a class.
And that's completely okay.
Sometimes the most transformative part of teacher training isn't learning how to teach someone else.
It's learning how to listen to yourself.
What Kind of Career Can You Build?
Yoga can become part of your work in many different ways.
Some teachers build careers teaching studio classes and private sessions.
Others move into workshops, retreats, corporate wellness, online teaching, specialised classes or further education.
Some combine yoga with another career.
And for others, teaching a couple of classes each week is enough.
There isn't one right way to be a yoga teacher.
At Kula, our hope is that you'll leave with the skills and confidence to explore your own version of it.
Why Train at Kula?

It's at the heart of everything we do.

You'll learn alongside a small group of people who are curious about the practice and committed to showing up for the process.
You'll be taught by experienced teachers who bring different perspectives, backgrounds and areas of expertise.
And you'll be encouraged to question, explore and think critically — not simply memorise information.
We don't want you to leave sounding like us.
We want you to leave sounding like you.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the training take?
Our 200hr training is delivered through an immersive in-person format. The training starts January 31st and goes until May 31st. Our training will be over 3 weekend blocks from Friday- Saturday to fit around life outside of the training.
Is the training suitable for beginners?
We recommend having an established personal yoga practice before beginning - you gotta actually like yoga and have a bit of time under your belt on the mat before you invest your time and energy, but you do not need to be an advanced practitioner or experienced teacher.
Do I need to be flexible?
No. Functional movement and individual variation are central to our approach.
Will I be qualified to teach after completing the training?
You'll receive your 200hr yoga teacher training certification upon successfully completing the required training and assessment components.
Can I do the training if I'm not sure I want to teach?
Absolutely. Many people undertake teacher training primarily to deepen their own understanding and practice. You can also sign up for the first 100hrs to see if you like it and dip your toes into anatomy, philosophy and asana labs and choose to continue on if you want to explore more.
What makes Kula's training different?
Our approach brings together traditional yoga philosophy, functional anatomy, movement science, embodiment, teaching methodology and lived experience — within a supportive Christchurch community.
