Who we are
A space to move, connect, and come home to yourself.
Kula was created from a deep desire to bring people together through mindful movement and shared presence.
Rooted in the Sanskrit word for community, Kula /ku.lɐ/ (KOO-lah) is more than a studio — it’s a sanctuary.
A place to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with yourself and those around you.
Here, strength and stillness coexist. Every class, conversation, and experience is designed to help you return to your centre.
At Kula, movement and connection are at the heart of wellbeing.
We’re here to help you feel centred, supported, and part of something bigger.
Meet OUr founder Ellie Cooper
Opening Kula was one of the biggest leaps of faith I've ever taken.
Like many people who find their way to yoga, my journey began as a personal practice. Over the years, that practice became a career, a passion, and a lens through which I learned to navigate life's challenges and opportunities. What started as teaching classes gradually evolved into a deeper calling: creating a space where others could experience the same sense of connection, growth, and belonging that yoga had given me.
After years of teaching throughout Christchurch, leading trainings, continuing my own studies, and dreaming about what was possible, my husband and I decided to take the leap and open Kula in January 2026.
It wasn't the obvious or easy choice. Opening a studio requires equal parts courage, optimism, and trust. But we believed deeply in the need for a space that felt welcoming, grounded, educational, and genuinely community-focused. A place where movement could be both intelligent and accessible. A place where people could come not just to exercise, but to connect—with themselves and with one another.
My own path has taken me across the world—from growing up in Canada to living in Japan, travelling throughout Asia, and eventually building a life here in New Zealand. Along the way I've had the privilege of studying with extraordinary teachers and exploring everything from anatomy and functional movement to meditation, philosophy, sound healing, and more. Kula is a reflection of those experiences and the belief that learning never truly ends.
Today, when I walk through the studio and see friendships forming, conversations happening after class, teachers supporting one another, and students growing in confidence, I feel incredibly grateful that we chose to take the risk.
And while I'm proud of what Kula is today, what excites me most is what it can become.
My vision is for Kula to grow into one of New Zealand's leading hubs for yoga education and teacher development. I want it to be a place where teachers can continue learning long after their initial training—through mentorships, workshops, advanced trainings, and continuing education that blends modern movement science with the deeper traditions of yoga.
I also dream of taking our community beyond the studio walls. I envision retreats in beautiful and inspiring locations around the world—places that invite adventure, rest, connection, and transformation. Whether that's Bali, Japan, Sri Lanka, or somewhere we haven't discovered yet, I hope these experiences allow people to reconnect with themselves while creating lifelong memories and friendships.
Most of all, I hope Kula continues to be a place where people feel welcome from the moment they walk through the door. A place where everyone—regardless of age, experience, background, or ability—feels that they belong.
Because at the end of the day, Kula was never just about opening a yoga studio.
It was about creating a community.
And this is only the beginning.
